Marrow-derived human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) have short proliferative longevity, compared with embryonic stem cells, and thus, important challenge in regenerative medicine is to improve the replicative capacity of human hMSCs. The life span of hMSCs have successfully been prolonged by bmi-1, which reduces p16INK4a expression and is essential for self-renewal of hematopoietic stem cells.
